4.13.3 Pets in Placement

If a child wishes to have a pet in placement, this should be thoroughly discussed with the child and the Foster Carer and their family.

Any decision to obtain a pet should only be made when agreement has been reached with the foster carer and their family and ensuring that the child is capable of looking after the pet.

When a child is to be placed in a foster placement where there are pets, the appropriate assessment should be conducted so as to ensure that the child will be safe with the pet in the placement. (The pet assessment form can be obtained from the Fostering Service.)

In the case of children who are in residential placements, the matter should be determined by the specific rules and regulations of the placement.
